Timmons Leads U.S. Past Soviet Team in Volleyball Series

Olympian Steve Timmons led the USA Volleyball team to victory over the Soviet Union, 15-6, 15-12, 15-10, in the second round of the USA Cup volleyball exhibition series Wednesday at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

Timmons, from Newport Beach, had 24 kills, and teammate Bob Ctvrtlik had 23. Starting middle blocker Mark Arnold, from Costa Mesa, led the team with six blocks and added seven kills.

The USA will face South Korea at UC Irvine’s Bren Center at 7 p.m. Friday. The USSR will play Brazil following the USA match to determine the pairings for Saturday’s medal-round games at the Forum.

On Tuesday in Seattle, the United States swept Brazil in three games, Timmons getting 23 kills.
