Montreal made the second major addition to its pitching staff in less than two months, acquiring Zane Smith from the Atlanta Braves for three minor leaguers.
Smith, a left-hander, was 1-12 this season for the Braves. He will be used primarily in relief.
In May, the Expos acquired Mark Langston from the Seattle Mariners for three minor leaguers.
Atlanta also made another trade, sending outfielder Dion James to Cleveland for outfielder Oddibe McDowell.
