Thirteen San Diego employers have been fined a total of $40,250 for hiring illegal aliens in violation of the Immigration Reform and Control Act passed by Congress in 1986, the Border Patrol announced Thursday.
The fines, levied in June, ranged from $1,250 to $9,500, said Border Patrol Supervisory Agent Michael Gregg. Fines can go as high as $10,000, Gregg said.
Luis Sanchez, owner of 38th Towing/Auto Body on Imperial Avenue, said the $9,500 fine imposed on him will almost put him out of business.
“They’re ripping me off,” Sanchez said of the Border Patrol’s action. “I don’t think it’s fair. I’ve got one employee left.”
