SportScope : Heat Tops League by 6 Points, Seattle Next

With three games remaining in its regular season, the L.A. Heat holds a six-point lead over second place San Diego in the Western Soccer League South Division. The Heat plays at Seattle on Saturday night. The Heat defeated San Francisco Bay, 2-1, last week while San Diego lost to Portland (4-0) and San Francisco (3-1). L.A. finishes the season by playing host to San Diego on July 22.

The U.S. Tennis Assn. National Junior Tennis League of Southern California begins its 11th season Monday and openings are available. The national nonprofit program is for ages 8-18. Players receive a T-shirt and 18 hours of instruction over a six-week period. The cost is $10 per player. A limited number of scholarships for needy players are available. The first leg in a three-race, $3,000 mini-series for CRA sprint cars is on tap at Ascot Raceway on Saturday night at 8. The other events are slated for Aug. 8 and Sept. 9. In addition, the July 22 main at Ascot has been extended from 30 to 40 laps. Other events at Ascot this weekend include the CMC Motocross tonight at 7:30, preceded by four-wheel ATVs and KARTS at 7. On Sunday night at 6 the NASCAR series continues for pro stocks, bomber ovals, figure 8s and hobby stocks.
