Former El Segundo Councilman Dies

Former El Segundo City Councilman Charles K. (Chip) Armstrong died Friday from cancer of the pancreas. He was 66.

Armstrong served on the City Council for six years beginning in 1980. He served as mayor from 1984 to 1986.

A native of New Jersey, Armstrong moved to the South Bay in 1946 after serving in the Navy. He was a physical education teacher and coach for 31 years, retiring from the Los Angeles Community College District in 1982. He was also a Los Angeles County lifeguard for 28 years.

Armstrong, who was active in many civic and professional organizations, was California Community College Coach of the Year in 1980. He officiated track and field events at the 1984 Olympics.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at El Segundo United Methodist Church, 540 Main St.
