Jack and Betty Russell of Vermont Travel Information Service warn that it’s imperative to book lodging early. Inns/B&Bs; are being reserved far ahead of the foliage months. The Russells operate a free booking agency they refer to as a “one-call” operation. They’ll make all your reservations. (The Russells work with 350 innkeepers throughout the state.) They’ll also steer you to wineries, cheese-making farms, antique shops, secret fishing holes, riding stables.

Passion Play

Tickets are selling rapidly for next year’s Passion Play in Oberammergau, West Germany. Performances (held only once every 10 years) will take place May 21 to Sept. 28. The all-day spectacle begins at 9 a.m., ends at 5:30 p.m. A series of living tableaux depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

The Passion Play was first performed in 1634 after residents of Oberammergau made a vow to stage the religious spectacle every decade in gratitude for being spared from the Black Plague. Because of its popularity, the play is a sellout months before the first performance.
