STATE : School Board Elects Goldberg Head
Jackie Goldberg was elected president of the Los Angeles Unified School District this morning amid predictions for a more conciliatory year in the nation’s second largest school system. However, tensions remained evident as board member Rita Walters denounced Goldberg’s policies, particularly regarding salaries of administrators, and cast the sole vote against Goldberg. Goldberg, who succeeds Roberta Weintraub as president, said she will concentrate on issues of bilingual education, dropout rates, shared decision-making between teachers and administrators and improvement in the K through 12 grades.
