John McEnroe and Andre Agassi will head the American Davis Cup team scheduled to play defending champion West Germany in the semifinals later this month, the U.S. Tennis Assn. said today.

In addition to McEnroe and Agassi, captain Tom Gorman selected doubles specialists Ken Flach and Robert Seguso for the competition July 21-23 at Munich. All but Agassi were members of the team that lost to West Germany two years ago at Hartford, Conn.

In that competition, Flach and Seguso beat Eric Jelen and Ricki Osterthun, and three-time Wimbledon champion McEnroe lost an epic five-set singles match to Boris Becker, who earlier this week won Wimbledon for the third time. With the matches tied at 2-2, Becker beat Tim Mayotte to give West Germany the victory.

U.S. Holds Lead

This year’s meeting will be the ninth between the nations, with the Americans holding a 6-2 lead. West Germany has prevailed in the last two match-ups, having won 3-2 in 1985 at Hamburg.

In selecting McEnroe, Gorman, in his fourth year as captain, has the all-time-winningest U.S. Davis Cup player. McEnroe, who lost last week in the semifinals at Wimbledon, is 39-8 in singles play and 15-1 in doubles. Agassi is 7-0 in singles, and Flach is 11-0 in doubles. He is 10-0 while paired with Seguso.
