Bay Area Rapid Transit District rail service between Oakland and San Francisco was disrupted for about 40 minutes after a small fire erupted on a connector providing power to the electrified third rail. Four trains carrying several hundred passengers were stranded--none of them in the transbay tube--until power was restored. Sy Mouber, a BART spokesman, said the system was functioning normally in time for the evening rush hour. The 71-mile system carries about 200,000 passengers a day.
