The registrar of voters office announced that 5 p.m. on Aug. 11 is the filing deadline for Laguna Niguel residents seeking to file as candidates for a proposed city council.

Proposed cityhood for Laguna Niguel will be on the ballot in that area on Nov. 7. In addition to the cityhood referendum, the ballot will have the names of candidates seeking the five city council positions. Those five obtaining the top vote among the candidates will be elected. They will take office only if a majority of residents vote for cityhood.

Nominating petitions for the office of city council may be obtained beginning Monday at the registrar of voters office, 1300 S. Grand Ave., Santa Ana. A person seeking to run for the council must be a registered voter living within the limits of the proposed city of Laguna Niguel. Additionally, a candidate must obtain the signatures of 20 to 30 registered voters in that area, and the completed petition must be turned into the registrar’s office by Aug. 11.
