Costa Rica virtually clinched a berth in the 1990 World Cup by beating El Salvador, 1-0, on a goal by Pastor Fernandez in the 45th minute at San Jose, Costa Rica.
Costa Rica (5-2-1) finished with 11 points, and in all probability will qualify for its first-ever World Cup.
