Azusa : Fund-Raising Tactic Banned

After a contentious meeting in which City Council members clashed repeatedly with the mayor, the council adopted a policy forbidding its members from inviting city commissioners and staff members to political fund-raising events.

The move was in response to Mayor Eugene F. Moses’ invitation of newly appointed commissioners to a $50-a-plate dinner later this month for his 1990 reelection campaign.

Councilman Harry L. Stemrich called the action unethical and won council support to direct City Atty. Peter M. Thorson to draw up a policy. Stemrich’s motion was passed on a 4-0 vote, with Moses abstaining.
