Blaine McCallister, trying to become the first player to defend his title successfully at Coal Valley, Ill., in 17 years, regained the lead in Saturday’s third round of the $700,000 Hardee’s golf tournament.

McCallister, who was the first-round leader with a 65, shot a three-under-par 67 for a 54-hole total of nine-under-par 201.

He rolled in a 20-foot putt from the edge of the green on No. 14 and holed a 35-foot chip shot from the rough on No. 16 to go 10 under par, but he bogeyed No. 17.
