BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS

Share

Powerless: Here’s the at-bat leaders, through Friday, among players who have yet to hit a home run this season: American League: Ozzie Guillen, 388; Harold Reynolds, 360; Jim Gantner, 308; Jody Reed, 307; Felix Fermin, 295. National League: Gerald Young, 344; Willie Randolph, 340; Vince Coleman, 338; Jose Oquendo, 326; Alfredo Griffin, 270.

Still Bitter: Chicago White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk, who recently got his 2,000th career hit, is only 18 homers shy of Johnny Bench’s career record for catchers of 328. Fisk would probably have it already if the Sox hadn’t moved him to left field in 1986. What did Fisk think of the move? “It was like getting your heart torn out and shoved back in your face,” he said the other day.

Nicknames: A San Francisco radio station selected Pacific Sock Exchange as winner of a contest aimed at providing a proper label for Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell, the Giants’ 1-2 punch. Other entries included: Lumberjacks; Captains of Crunch, and The Dudes of Destruction.

Milestones: Greg Swindell (12-2) is bidding to become the first Cleveland Indian pitcher to win 20 games since Gaylord Perry in 1974, the first Cleveland left-hander to win 20 since Sam McDowell in 1972 and the first Cleveland pitcher to lead the league in winning percentage since Sonny Siebert in 1966.

The Next Repoz: Pitcher Jeff Repoz of Golden West College in Orange County signed the other day with Philadelphia Phillie scout Tom Ferguson. Repoz is the son of Roger Repoz, once billed by the New York Yankees as the “next Mickey Mantle.” Repoz batted .224 and hit 82 homers in a nine-year career with the Yankees, Kansas City A’s and Angels.
