Weapons Team Surrounds House

A dozen officers from the Huntington Beach Police Department’s special weapons team surrounded a home Monday evening and tried to talk a distraught young man who had reportedly fired shots into giving himself up, authorities said.

Police said that as of 10:40 p.m., the situation was under control but that the unidentified man was still in the house with his father.

“He’s a little mixed up right now. He’s probably been drinking, but we’re not sure what he wants,” Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Mike Relic said.

The man reportedly fired several shots into the air from the house in the 16900 block of A Street sometime after 8 p.m. but did not hit anyone, police said.

“I was outside walking to my car and I heard gunshots,” said Barbara Fernandez, who said she lives next door. She said the young man, who is about 23 or 24 years old, lives at the house with his father and had apparently been upset over the breakup of a romance.

Neighbors congregated at a liquor store on Warner Avenue and Beach Boulevard to keep track of events at the house as unconfirmed rumors circulated that police were about to enter with tear gas.

“It’s just kind of a nervous wreck right now,” said Suzie Ament, 24, who lives on A Street.
