Because of illness, pianist Andre Previn has canceled his two appearances next month at the La Jolla Chamber Music Society’s SummerFest ’89. Society executive director Neale Perl announced Tuesday that Russian pianist Yefim Bronfman will replace Previn at both the Aug. 20 benefit concert and the Aug. 22 chamber music program. The 31-year-old pianist is a veteran of many festivals, the Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia, New York’s Mostly Mozart and last season’s local Batiquitos Festival. He has also performed frequently and recorded with violinist Shlomo Mintz, as well as with the Juilliard, Guarneri and Fine Arts Quartets.

On the benefit concert, Schumann’s Piano Quintet will be replaced by the Brahms F Minor Piano Quintet; on the second program, the previously scheduled Dvorak Piano Quartet, will be replaced by the Shostakovich E Minor Trio. SummerFest ’89 runs Aug. 18-27 at La Jolla’s Sherwood Auditorium.
