A softer, gentler Morton Downey Jr., the self-described loudmouth whose syndicated talk show was canceled earlier this month, told a Manhattan news conference this week that he will continue his television career and that he’ll also have a daily radio “show” (two 2 1/2-minute segments that will be “thought-provoking and delivered in a non-abrasive manner, so I can reach people I never could before”). Appearing quiet, reserved and soft spoken, Downey claimed this is next season’s model of himself. He was guarded at the session by two policemen.
