Dana Point : New Greeting Signs at Dana Point Vandalized

Share

Two weeks after city officials put up “Welcome to Dana Point” greetings at the city limits, three of the new signs have been stolen or destroyed.

“It looks like acts of vandalism,” said John Donlevy, assistant to the city manager. “The parts of the signs that we find are all torn up.”

The attractive greeting signs are made of wood and have a circular picture depicting the Pilgrim, a ship berthed at Dana Point Harbor.

The signs, painted blue and white, cost about $500 each, Donlevy said.

The wave of thefts and destruction began July 26 when the first sign, situated at Del Avion and Crown Valley Parkway, was stolen.

Two others, one at Pacific Coast Highway near Crown Valley Parkway, and the other at Del Avion and Street of the Golden Lantern, were taken during the past weekend.

“We don’t know yet what we’ll do about replacing them,” Donlevy said Tuesday. “If these signs are that easy to take up and destroy, we may have to consider a different type of sign.”

During the July 18 dedication ceremony when the first sign was installed, city officials said the markers proudly noted the advent of Dana Point as a new city. Dana Point officially became a city on Jan. 1.
