A 16-year-old Fullerton boy armed with a sawed-off shotgun barricaded himself inside his home for more than four hours Saturday until authorities finally coaxed him out.

The incident began about 9:30 a.m. when the boy was confronted by a man near his home as the youth reportedly tried to break into a car. The witness told police the boy pulled a sawed-off shotgun from under his T-shirt, threatened him and then ran away.

He was seen entering a building in the 3100 block of Topaz Lane and was traced to his apartment.

Police arrived at the scene and contacted the youth’s mother and sister, who left the residence, but the boy refused to talk to authorities. A SWAT team was deployed, and at 2:30 p.m. the youth agreed to speak with authorities by phone and surrendered without incident.

The boy, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault and possession of stolen property and transferred to Juvenile Hall, police said.
