Rookie quarterback Rodney Peete of USC and veterans Rusty Hilger and Bob Gagliano have the best chances to start at quarterback for the Detroit Lions, assistant Mouse Davis said at training camp in Rochester, Minn.

Other quarterbacks in camp are veterans Eric Hipple and Chuck Long, who is recovering from off-season elbow surgery.

“Rodney’s good,” Davis said. “He doesn’t have the understanding Gagliano has and he doesn’t have the arm Hilger does, but they’re all a little different.”
