Al Unser Jr. won the finale of the International Race of Champions at Watkins Glen, N.Y., but Terry Labonte’s third-place finish gave him the championship of the four-race international road circuit all-star series for 1989.
Labonte took the $200,000 first prize in the $806,500 series and wound up with 72 points. Unser finished second with 60 points and $93,000 as he tied former stock car champion Cale Yarborough for the most career IROC victories with five.
