President Bush, saying “farmers have indeed suffered,” today signed legislation providing $897 million in disaster relief for farms where crops were battered this year by rain, drought and other foul weather.

In remarks at a signing ceremony, Bush said the Disaster Assistance Act of 1989 brings “important relief to farm families hit by the extreme weather.”

“The farmer is at the mercy of the forces of nature, and sometimes nature fails him,” said the President, who persuaded Congress to trim the relief package from an earlier $1.3-billion version passed by the House.

“This act will help farmers recover after damaging rain and wind and will see others through a year when they’ve had to stand by and watch their crops fail,” Bush said.
