Henri Goetz, 80, an abstract painter who invented carborundum engraving in which silicon carbide is used as an abrasive. Born in the United States, Goetz moved to France in 1932 and became a French citizen, serving in the Resistance during World War II. He was a friend of artists Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro and was married to the painter Christine Boumeester, who died 15 years ago. Known for working with all materials, Goetz taught his engraving process and other artistic media at the Parisian arts academy he founded. In Nice on Saturday.
