Mayor Seeks to Divest on N. Ireland, Equal Job Issues

Mayor Raymond L. Flynn wants the city to take its pension money and trust funds away from companies that do business in Northern Ireland and do not adhere to equal job opportunities.

Flynn filed a home rule petition calling for the divestiture and signed an executive order requiring city contractors owned by companies doing business in Northern Ireland to subscribe to the so-called MacBride Principles, standards aimed at reducing job discrimination against Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland.

The home rule petition must be approved by the City Council and the state Legislature to take effect. The executive order, which affects contracts worth several million dollars, does not need City Council approval.
