Gary Redus doubled and scored on Jose Lind’s sacrifice fly in the 14th inning and four Pittsburgh pitchers combined on a three-hitter Thursday night as the Pirates beat the skidding Houston Astros, 3-2, at Pittsburgh.

Houston scored only four runs in 32 innings against the Pirates while being swept in their three-game series. The loss dropped the Astros four games behind the National League West leading San Francisco Giants, who were idle.

Redus doubled to center to start the 14th against Juan Agosto (3-5), went to third on Mike LaValliere’s sacrifice and scored when Lind lofted a fly ball to left field.

Doug Bair (2-2), the Pirates’ fourth pitcher, pitched two scoreless innings.

Pirate starter Doug Drabek allowed two hits and two runs in nine innings before Neal Heaton pitched a scoreless 10th and Bill Landrum went two scoreless innings.

Houston scored in the second without a hit. Terry Puhl walked, stole second and scored on Bobby Bonilla’s two-base throwing error.

St. Louis 4, Atlanta 1--Joe Magrane pitched a three-hitter for his sixth consecutive victory and Pedro Guerrero drove in three runs at Atlanta as the Cardinals moved to within 2 1/2 games of the division-leading Chicago Cubs in the East.

Magrane (17-7) struck out six and did not walk a batter in pitching his eighth complete game, tying Mike Scott of Houston and Dave Stewart of Oakland for the major league lead in victories.

Guerrero doubled home the tying run in the sixth and hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Tom Glavine (12-7).
