Witnesses told police that the two men, described as residents of the Rancho Las Palmas Apartments in the 200 block of San Ysidro Boulevard, began arguing in an inner walkway of the complex about 11:45 p.m. Friday.

According to witnesses, both men fired handguns. Hernandez fell, mortally wounded, to the walkway, police said, while Martinez ran to a nearby landing, where he collapsed after being shot once in the back.

Police found two handguns at the scene. They were still seeking a motive for the shootings.
