THE SIDELINES : 17 Nominated for Women’s Titles
Gold-medalist swimmer Janet Evans and jockey Julie Krone are among the nominees for the Women’s Sports Foundation 1989 Amateur and Professional Sportswoman of the Year awards.
Evans and eight other nominees, including gold-medalist pentathlete Florence Griffith-Joyner, are up for the amateur honor, won last year by Griffith-Joyner’s sister-in-law, Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Joining Krone as nominees for the professional award are tennis star Steffi Graf and golfer Betsy King.
The 17 athletes nominated for both awards have collectively earned five world championships and four Olympic gold medals and hold 32 major professional championship titles.
