Pacoima Fighter Scores Win Over Ranked Opponent
Abe Gomez of Pacoima, Calif., controlled the second half of the fight and won a majority decision over world-ranked Jeff Franklin of Las Vegas in their 10-round junior-lightweight main event Tuesday night.
Gomez won the final two rounds and four of the last five on all three judges’ cards to pull out the victory.
Gomez piled up his winning margin by landing blows to the head while thwarting Franklin’s counterpunching, which had been effective the first five rounds.
There were no knockdowns.
Gomez, 128 1/2, improved to 15-2-1. Franklin, 129, who is ranked No. 8 by the International Boxing Federation and No. 10 by the World Boxing Council, slipped to 21-4-3.
