THE SIDELINES : Stieb Leads Jays to Beat Sox 5-1
Dave Stieb won for the fifth time in six decisions and George Bell hit a two-run homer today, leading Toronto past the Chicago White Sox 5-1 for the Blue Jays’ ninth victory in 10 games.
Stieb, 14-8, had pitched his fifth career one-hitter last Saturday against Milwaukee. This time, he allowed four hits in six innings, struck out two and walked two. Jim Acker followed with two hitless innings and Tom Henke pitched the ninth to finish the combined six-hitter. Henke, who struck out one, has 40 strikeouts in his last 25 1/3 innings.
