Palos Verdes resident Bonnie Landau has been recognized by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for her contributions to the San Luis Obispo cultural environment. Landau, a senior architecture major, was honored as an outstanding fine artist.

Recent high school graduates Huy Ly of Carson High School and Alonso Berumen of Banning High School in Wilmington are recipients of 1989 college scholarships from Watson Land Co. Each student was awarded a four-year, $2,400 college grant.

Lisa Teruya, Torrance High School graduate, was among 350 students from around the country selected to attend the 1989 Postgraduate National Young Leaders Conference held recently in Washington by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. During the six-day conference, Teruya and other students met with key leaders and newsmakers from the government, the media and the diplomatic corps.

Three South Bay students have each received $1,000 scholarships awarded by Rep. Mervyn M. Dymally (D-Compton). The students are Raymond G. Ferrer of Carson, who will attend Cal Poly Pomona; Lourdes Olivar, Carson, UC Davis; Claudia Palos, Gardena, UC Santa Barbara. The students participated in the Mervyn M. Dymally Young Scholars Program last summer by attending Metropolitan University in Puerto Rico for five weeks.

San Pedro High School students April Noceti and Sandra Valdez, both 16, attended the American Red Cross Leadership Development Center held Aug. 16-18 at the Presbyterian Conference Center in Pacific Palisades. The Red Cross sponsors the annual event to interest Los Angeles area youth in community service, including opportunities as Red Cross representatives in their schools.

Three Gardena students were recently honored by the Automobile Club of Southern California for their award-winning entries in the American Automobile Assn.’s National School Traffic Safety Poster Program. Their posters were titled “Be Extra Alert in Bad Weather.” Third-grader Jason Chic received a commendation award; fifth-grader Rosen Trinidad received a merit citation award and third-grader Tina Muraoka received an honorable mention.

Dorothy Larson will serve a third consecutive year as president of the Torrance YWCA board of directors, according to YWCA Director Nancy Lee Fernas. Other officers are Jamie Watson, Shirley Borks, Carole Ellwood, Kathleen Laughlin, Becky Remelmeyer and Jane Au.

Mary L. Gimenez has been appointed director of the San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the hospital. Gimenez is responsible for planning and administering foundation activities and overseeing its support groups, which include the Conches Club, Friends of Hospice, Women’s Guild and the newly formed Professional Group.

Dr. Rosemary Dobson Leake of Rolling Hills has been selected by the National Board of the Medical College of Pennsylvania to receive its 27th annual award as a distinguished woman physician/scientist. Leake is chief of neonatology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, professor of pediatrics at UCLA School of Medicine and director of the Perinatal Clinical Research Center for the Research and Education Institute at Harbor-UCLA.

Six physicians recently graduated from the Family Practice Residency Program at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. Completing the three-year program were: Drs. Ben D. Cockcroft, R. Scott Nelson, Michael T. O’Brien, Maria A., Pielaet, Sharon Silverman and Anne L. Sullivan.

Dr. Jerome Ettinger, a surgeon, has been elected to a second one-year term as chairman of the board of directors for the Research and Education Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. He will also continue as president of the center’s Professional Staff Assn. Dr. Frank L. Greenway of Torrance was elected vice chairman of the board.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center researcher Dr. Dan C. Cooper has received a research grant from the Arthritis Foundation to study fibrositis. Also known as fibromyalgia, fibrositis is a painfully disabling disease of which there is little scientific knowledge.

Alan M. Zusman has been named executive chairman for the seventh annual Norris Foundation World Wheelchair Invitational, to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the South End Racquet and Health Club in Torrance. Zusman is managing partner of Zusman & Cameron, certified public accountants, Palos Verdes. The event will benefit Casa Colina Peninsula Rehabilitation Center in Lomita, Casa Colina Center South Bay in Torrance and the Casa Colina Wheelchair Sports Program. This year’s tournament offers a $1,000 purse.

Rebecca Sargent, president of the Redondo Beach City School District Board of Education, recently completed a comprehensive training program for school board members designed to inform them about educational issues and help them perform their roles more effectively. The program, sponsored by the California School Boards Assn., provides trustees with in-depth instruction in all aspects of school district governance.
