The East : Harris, Ford Lead West Virginia Over Ball State, 35-10

Major Harris passed to Reggie Rembert for two touchdowns on plays of 16 and 70 yards, and tailback Garrett Ford rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries as 17th-ranked West Virginia defeated Ball State, 35-10, Saturday at Morgantown, W.Va.

Ford, a redshirt freshman who is the son of former Mountaineer and Denver Bronco running back Garrett Ford, became the first player in the school’s history to rush for 100 yards in his first game.

Harris, who had several passes dropped, completed seven of 17 for 178 yards. He also rushed for 79 yards in 10 carries.

Greg Jones, Harris’ backup, passed to freshman James Jett for a 38-yard touchdown play with just over four minutes remaining.

Pittsburgh 38, Pacific 3--Curvin Richards, who rushed for 1,228 yards last season as a freshman, ran for 112 yards and a touchdown as the 20th-ranked Panthers rolled over the Tigers of the Big West Conference at Pittsburgh.

Alex Van Pelt, the first freshman quarterback to start a season opener in the modern era of Pitt football, ran for one touchdown in the first half and later threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to fourth-string tailback Glenn Deveaux.

Hosea Heard, who sat out last season for disciplinary reasons, scored on a 55-yard reverse, and Henry Tuten added a 60-yard punt return for a score.

The game marked the debut of Walt Harris as Pacific’s coach. Next week, his team plays eighth-ranked Auburn. Pacific, outscored in its last three season openers, 133-17, hasn’t had a winning season since 1977.

Rutgers 17, Cincinnati 17--The Bearcats, trailing, 17-3, scored twice in the fourth quarter to earn a tie with the Scarlet Knights at Cincinnati.

Don Hoog passed eight yards to fullback Doug Hoog for one of the Bearcats’ touchdowns, and tailback Joe Abrams ran 34 yards for the other with 1:43 remaining.

Touchdown passes by Scott Erney of 11 yards to running back James Cann and four yards to running back Scott Blanche gave Rutgers its 17-3 lead.

Abrams led the Bearcats in rushing with eight carries for 52 yards.

Western Michigan 31, Temple 24--Michael Greene scored on a 73-yard run with 5:27 left to give the Broncos a victory over the Owls at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Colgate 35, Fordham 3--Dave Goodwin completed 20 of 28 passes for 267 yards to lead the Red Raiders past the Rams at Hamilton, N.Y.

Colgate’s Dan McCarthy caught seven passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
