A Mexican woman was killed early Tuesday when she was struck by a pickup truck as she attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, about 10 miles north of Oceanside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Rita Aguilar Torres, 36, died at the scene from multiple injuries, said deputy coroner Max Murphy.
Torres was apparently trying to follow her two children across a stretch of the busy freeway, about 3 1/2 miles north of Las Pulgas Road, when she was hit at 5:30 a.m. by a pickup driven by Kenneth Freistat, 50, of Long Beach, CHP officer Jerry Bohrer said.
Bohrer said he didn’t know the ages of the children or whether Torres was an illegal alien.
Freistat was not cited.
