Loyola Volleyball Team Goes North for Tournament

The Loyola Marymount University women’s volleyball team, off to a 0-2 start, will compete in the two-day University of Oregon Tournament at Eugene starting today. In the round-robin format, the Lions face Boise State at 11 a.m. today, then play Oregon, their host, at 8 p.m. On Saturday they play Wyoming at 6 p.m. Tina Hammers and Kerry House lead the attack with 12 kills apiece. In other action involving Loyola teams, the men’s soccer squad, 0-2, plays in the Azusa Pacific Tournament today and Saturday, and the water polo team competes in the Gaucho Cup today and Saturday at UC Santa Barbara.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team, 1-1, travels to San Diego this weekend for noon games at U.S. International on Saturday and the University of San Diego on Sunday. Dominguez Hills’ women’s soccer team, 1-0 and unscored on, will play host to San Francisco State at 3 p.m. today, then travels to Cal State San Bernardino for an 11 a.m. game Saturday. The Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team, 1-1 and coming off a four-game victory over the Master’s, plays in the UC Davis Tournament today and Saturday.

The Oak Corralers of Redondo Beach won their second consecutive state title recently in the Southern California Softball Assn. tournament. The Corralers emerged from a 73-team field with a 9-1 record, including a 10-9 extra-inning victory in the championship. Gordy Stueve was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Todd Johnston received the Gold Glove Trophy, and Gary Bernstein, Dave Dawson and Mike Fisher were all named to the all-tournament team. The Corralers advance to the Western Regional Tournament in Las Vegas.

Two Torrance teams have won the city’s first-ever female softball titles in the California Municipal Athletic Federation Tournaments held in late August. The Mean Green Machine, a team of 9 and 10-year-olds, defeated teams from Artesia, Riverside and Montebello to win the Division 1 title. Against Riverside, pitcher Crystal Ruddock threw a no-hitter and struck out 21. The Blues, made up of women 18 and older, defeated teams from Riverside, Burbank and Escondido to win Division 5. The tournaments were held in Torrance.
