Doug Dascenzo and Marvell Wynne made Don Zimmer look real smart.

The Cub manager rested Jerome Walton and Andre Dawson Thursday. Dascenzo started for Walton and hit his first major league home run. Wynne, making his firststart since the Cubs got him from San Diego, hit his seventh home run of the season as the Cubs beat Philadelphia, 6-2, in Chicago.

Mike Bielecki won his 15th game, and the Cubs increased their lead in the National League East to 1 1/2 games over St. Louis.

Dascenzo, called up from the Cubs’ triple-A Iowa team this month, hit his home run in the third inning off Ken Howell (11-11) after a four-pitch walk to Bielecki. It gave Chicago a 3-0 lead.

Bielecki (15-6) gave up two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings and won for the first time since Aug. 16.

San Francisco 7, Atlanta 5--Kevin Mitchell and Will Clark again were the star attractions. This time, Chris Speier joined the supporting cast.

Mitchell hit his 42nd home run; Clark drove in three runs with a triple and a double, and Speier doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Giants rallied to beat the Braves at Atlanta.

Mitchell hit his homer in the ninth off DeWayne Henry. Mitchell leads the major leagues in home runs and RBIs (115).

Pittsburgh 7, Montreal 4--Pinch-hitter Jeff King drove in the tiebreaking run with a triple and continued home on right fielder Mike Aldrete’s error in the eighth inning as the Pirates beat the Expos at Montreal.

Barry Bonds opened the eighth with a double off John Candelaria. One out later, King, who was in a two-for-23 slump, hit a checked-swing roller into the right-field corner. King scored when Aldrete fumbled the ball.

Jefferies doubled in the first inning, hit a two-run homer in the third, doubled in the fourth and hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Frank Viola (3-4) worked seven innings, striking out six and walking two. He also got two hits and drove in the first run of his professional career.

Houston 2, San Diego 1--Jim Clancy combined with three relievers on a five-hitter at Houston as the Astros ended the Padres’ winning streak at six games.

It was the fourth victory for Clancy (7-11) against the Padres this season.
