FAA Increases Grant for Burbank Airport

Burbank Airport will receive $5.6 million in federal funds to help buy 16 acres that will be used for aviation facilities as part of the airport’s long-term improvements, it was announced Tuesday in Washington.

The funds, obtained under the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, are part of the $13.2-million purchase price of property at the northwest corner of the airport. The FAA had previously approved spending $6 million for buying the property, which had been the site of a Lockheed plant.

Airport spokesman Victor Gill said the additional $5.6 million “is a sizable grant in terms of the property we are purchasing.”

The site will eventually be used for new aviation buildings, Gill said. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, which manages the facility, plans to replace aging structures with new ones located farther from runways to meet federal standards adopted since the airport was built.
