A 72-year-old Los Angeles man who told authorities his daughter was addicted to cocaine and “was already dead in the eyes of the Lord” has been arrested and charged with shooting her to death, police said Wednesday.

Leonard Cason said he shot his daughter, Rifka, 29, to “just put her out of her misery,” investigators said.

Cason said his daughter had stolen between $3,000 and $4,000 from him to support her drug habit during the three years they lived together in the 200 block of West 54th Street, police said. He also told investigators that she had stolen his mother’s engagement ring and four television sets.

When his daughter returned home at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, Cason waited until she fell asleep on the couch before he fired a single shot to her head with a .38-caliber rifle, investigators said.

After the shooting, he called 911 and waited for police to arrive. He was being held without bail for investigation of murder.
