A motorist was killed Wednesday when his speeding pickup truck went off a road north of Lancaster, crashed and burst into flames, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was burned beyond recognition in the 2 a.m. accident at Avenue D and Sierra Highway, authorities said.

Officer Scott McKnight said the man was driving east about 70 m.p.h. on Avenue D and went through a stop sign where the road ends at Sierra Highway. The truck crossed the highway, crashed through a wood barrier, hit a gravel embankment next to a set of railroad tracks and flew 54 feet before landing upside-down and catching fire.
