Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

All of a sudden, the rare pop double--topping Billboard magazine’s pop album and singles charts the same week--is becoming commonplace. New Kids on the Block did it just two weeks ago and now Milli Vanilli has too, with its album “Girl, You Know It’s True” and the single, “Girl, I’m Gonna Miss You.” The Stones’ “Steel Wheels” album is rolling rapidly up the pop chart--from No. 44 to No. 12 in its second chart week. Surprise hit: heavy-metal veteran Alice Cooper’s fast-rising “Trash” (No. 30). Cher’s “Heart of Stone” album moved up three more notches, to No. 13. It’s a good bet to make the Top 10 because it features her smash single, “If I Could Turn Back Time,” which jumped four rungs to No. 3 and just might be No. 1 next week. Elton John’s “Sleeping With the Past” took off like a rocket, zooming to No. 29 after modestly entering the chart last week at No. 96.

* This fall, Motley Crue and Aerosmith will be bangin’ heads in the battle for supremacy in the holiday heavy-metal market. The Crue has a head start. Its new one, “Dr. Feelgood,” debuted at a lofty No. 24. This one could easily barge into the Top 10 next week.
