College Roundup : Irvine Knocks Off No. 1 Stanford

UC Irvine, ranked third in the nation, defeated No. 1 Stanford, 9-7, in the UC Irvine Invitational water polo tournament Friday at Heritage Park.

Sophomore Skylar Putman scored with four minutes and 20 seconds left in the quarter to break a 6-6 tie. Senior Julian Harvey put Irvine ahead, 8-6, when he scored with 2:53 left.

Stanford scored to pull within one, but freshman Pablo Yrizar scored his third goal of the game with three seconds remaining.

Irvine goalie Chris Duplanty had 15 saves.

In Irvine’s earlier game, Putman scored three goals to lead Irvine to a 13-5 victory over Fresno State.

Irvine will play UC San Diego today at 7 a.m. and UCLA at 12:30 p.m.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cal State Northridge 4, Southern California College 0--Scott Piri scored two goals to lead visiting Northridge. Terry Davilla and Jim Hofferber also scored for Northridge (3-0-1). SCC is 1-6.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Chapman 3, Redlands 0--Senior Stephanie Brown and sophomores Karen Pennington and Kristie Ritchie each scored to lead visiting Chapman (2-1).
