San Pasqual Surprises Mt. Carmel, 27-0

Imagination is not the first word that comes to San Pasqual Coach Mike Dolan’s mind when he describes his offensive philosophy.

In fact, after his team’s 27-0 shellacking of host Mt. Carmel in a nonleague game Friday night, Dolan said, “We’re not magicians. We’re not going to pull anything out of the hat.”

Dolan didn’t really need the “amazing Kreskin” act anyway against outmanned Mt. Carmel. Simple off tackles, dive plays and an occasional option did the job just fine.

San Pasqual quarterback Jon Ramirez threw the ball just four times, completing one for nine yards. San Pasqual (2-0) so dominated Mt. Carmel that the final stats, which read 300 total yards for San Pasqual to Mt. Carmel’s 88, didn’t even tell the entire story.

Mt. Carmel Coach Bill Christopher’s post-game post-mortem did, though.

“This is the most disappointed I’ve ever been in all my years of coaching,” Christopher said.

In what phases of the game was Mt. Carmel beat?

“Everything--coaching too,” Christopher said.

Was he surprised by the way San Pasqual played?

“My kids surprised me but (San Pasqual) didn’t.”

The way the game began it appeared Mt. Carmel might do the surprising as it crossed San Pasqual’s 30 twice in the first quarter. But Pat Abare, who kicked four field goals last week for Mt. Carmel (1-1), was short on a 50-yarder with 5:40 remaining, and a holding call nullified a Matt Miller to Rob Chase 14-yard touchdown play two minutes later.

On the next play, Miller was intercepted by John Kozar on a tipped ball.

San Pasqual then proceeded to take the ball 86 yards in nine plays for a touchdown, the key play being a 44-yard keeper on the option by Ramirez. Ramirez, who rushed 10 times for 88 yards, also capped the drive by running over from five yards out with 9:23 remaining in the half to make it 6-0. The kick was blocked.

After another missed field goal by Abare--this one from 45 yards-- San Pasqual once again shoved it down Mt. Carmel’s throat, going 80 yards in 13 plays. Cullen Owen (20 rushes for 111 yards) was the big play artist this time with an 18-yard run on third and nine from the Mt. Carmel 29.

Two plays later, Owen scored from eight yards out and it was 12-0 after a failed pass on the conversion.

There was more of the same on the offensive side in the second half from San Pasqual. Owens scored on a 31-yard dive play with 5:03 left in the third quarter, and Ramirez scored his second touchdown on a five-yard scamper with 5:02 remaining in the game.

Miller (eight of 17 for 68 yards and two interceptions) was sacked five times for 43 yards, four of them by San Pasqual’s Dan Skopec. Jeff Scott led Mt. Carmel with 57 yards rushing in 18 carries. Andy Bacon added 62 yards in 12 attempts for San Pasqual.
