High School Football : Lincoln Takes What’s Given in 46-20 Victory

Share

One could say No. 6 Point Loma used a ball-control offense Saturday against No. 2 Lincoln, judging from the Pointers’ 67-32 advantage in offensive plays.

Actually, the Pointers did anything but control the game. Instead, they gave it away.

Quarterback Dan White was intercepted three times; one of them was run back for a touchdown, the other two led to touchdowns. White also lost two fumbles, both eventually converted into touchdowns.

When it was all over, Point Loma had handed Lincoln a 46-20 victory.

It was the Pointers’ worst defeat since they opened the 1985 season with a 36-0 loss to El Camino. And while the Hornets (2-0) were busy taking it away, they were also giving it it right back. Well, actually they were shoving it back down the Pointers’ throats.

To wit:

--Dwayne McAfee returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown.

--Lincoln quarterback Michael Temple threw only four passes but completed three of them, including one for 56 yards and a TD.

--Fullback Terrell Davis carried the ball just six times in the first half, enough to gain 74 yards and two touchdowns. On both scoring runs--the first 50 yards, the second six--it appeared Davis was stopped at the line before he pushed his way through a wall of players.

“They hit me,” Davis said. “But they just couldn’t drop me.”

--Davis, who doubles as a linebacker, also forced a fumble.

--Tailback Charles Brown picked up 108 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Afterward, Lincoln Coach Vic Player could only state the obvious.

“I was pleased with every phase of our game,” he said. “We ran back a punt for a touchdown, our kicker (Thomas Baker) was kicking the ball into the end zone, we scored on the return of an intercepted pass, our tailback scored, our fullback scored and our quarterback threw for a touchdown. What more could you ask for?”

White, who proved adept at the art of scrambling, ended up throwing for 260 yards while completing 14 of 39 passes. J.J. Stokes caught seven for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
