Mauro Scores Five Goals for UCSD

Senior Heather Mauro set a UC San Diego record with five goals in the Tritons’ 9-0 victory over visiting Whittier Sunday in nonconference women’s soccer. Mauro is the all-time leading scorer for UCSD.

The Tritons other goals were scored by Felicia Faro, Teresa Schwaar, Jennifer Schwaar and Katy Dulock. UCSD (4-0) has now outscored its opponents, 24-0.

Scott Rommel’s goal off a corner kick led UCSD’s men to 1-0 victory over host Cal Poly Pomona. Rommel, who scored eight minutes into the second half, was assisted by Mike Kappes. UCSD (3-0-1) extended its unbeaten streak to 29 games.

Tom Crane scored two goals in University of San Diego’s 4-2 victory over visiting Nevada-Las Vegas in a men’s nonconference game. Andrew Kummer and Leo Ronces scored the other goals for USD (5-2).

WATER POLO

Ninth-ranked UC San Diego fell to 5-5 with four losses at the UC Irvine Invitational. All defeats came at the hands of top-five teams. The Tritons lost to No. 1 Stanford, 11-6, No. 3 UC Irvine, 15-9, No. 4 Long Beach State, 9-8, and No. 5 Pepperdine, 15-7.

AUTO RACING

Bob Longinetti and Bob Dorricott Jr. finished one-two to give Team San Jose its first league victory on the 3/8-mile oval track at El Cajon Speedway late Saturday. Fast-qualifier Longinetti led from start to finish in the 60-lap Firestone Oval Challenge, shortened from the scheduled 75 laps because of numerous crashes.

FOOTBALL

Former San Diego State star Craig Ellis moved into the Canadian Football League receiving lead by catching 10 passes in the Edmonton Eskimos’ 48-35 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a CFL game at Regina, Saskatchewan.

Ellis’ 10 receptions are a single game high for the CFL this season, and his 222 receiving yards are the fourth-best game total in Edmonton’s 79-year history.

YACHTING

Firecracker, skippered by John Doddridge out of the San Diego Yacht Club, won the PHRF Frazee Series at the San Diego Yacht Club with a total of 8.5 points. Ed Rutledge’s Motivation, from the Coronado Yacht Club, took second and Jenner Knight’s Corazon, from the SDYC, was third.
