The Italian and Spanish basketball leagues are working on an agreement aimed at holding down salaries Americans get for playing in Europe, an Italian league official said.

Gianni De Michelis, Italy’s foreign minister and chairman of the Italian league, said the “non-aggression” pact would help keep the price tag for American players “within reasonable limits.”

Danny Ferry of Duke, the Clippers’ No. 1 pick and the second 2 choice overall in the NBA draft in June, and Brian Shaw, who turned down an offer to stay with the Boston Celtics, signed million-dollar contracts with Il Messaggero of the Italian league earlier this summer.
