A married couple were seriously injured Tuesday night when a fire destroyed their North Park home, the Fire Department reported.

Herbert Bentley Sturdyvin, 49, and his wife, Laurie Ann, 27, were found unconscious in a bedroom and pulled from the burning residence, in the 2000 block of Dale Street.

Firefighters revived them at the scene, and they were taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center burn unit. Herbert Sturdyvin was listed in critical condition with first- and second-degree burns on his face. His wife was in serious condition with second-degree burns on her face and arms, Fire Department spokesman Jon MacDonald said.

The blaze, which was reported at 9:59 p.m., apparently was ignited by a smoldering cigarette left in the living room. The house, which did not have a smoke alarm, was destroyed. Authorities placed the home’s value at $75,000.
