L.A. River Freeway

Assemblyman Katz’s fanciful column about using the flood control channel for a commuter expressway ignores a lot of realities. He claims that trees serving as buffers would make noise disturbances to neighbors virtually non-existent. The flood control property is my next door neighbor. We bought our home 10 years ago specifically because of the quiet neighborhood. I would never have purchased a home next to a freeway; and trees will not block out traffic noise, honking horns, etc.

He mentions letters of support but fails to mention letters of opposition including mine and that of the Studio City Residents Assn. Some of my neighbors remember the flood in the 1930s that brought about the building of the channel. Several homes in my block were destroyed then. Next time, if Katz has his way, the destruction will include a lot of commuters and more homes because the channel would be blocked by vehicles and unable to do its intended job.
