Two of eight people suspected of being illegal aliens in a car being chased by the California Highway Patrol were thrown onto an Interstate 5 on-ramp and killed late Wednesday, authorities reported.

Juan Manuel Cabrera, believed to be 25 and from Tijuana, died at 10:50 p.m. at UC San Diego Medical Center, Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton said. The other victim, an unidentified man, died at 11:55 p.m. at Mercy Hospital, Bolton said.

Three of the other riders in the Toyota station wagon suffered minor injuries and were treated at Mission Bay Hospital, a San Diego police spokesman said.

The driver of the car, who escaped on foot, accelerated to 75 m.p.h. after the CHP attempted to pull him over on Interstate 5 near the Sea World exit for a routine traffic violation about 10:20 p.m., according to CHP Officer Larry Urban.

The chase continued about a mile north to Clairemont Drive, where the station wagon took the exit, ran a red light and hit another car, he said.

The driver of the second car, a 26-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

After the collision, the station wagon tried to return to the freeway on the northbound on-ramp, and the two men were thrown from the car. The driver stopped the car and fled, Urban said.

The station wagon had been reported stolen. The CHP believes the vehicle was headed to Los Angeles, Urban said.

All five passengers in the station wagon were handed over to the Border Patrol, a police spokesman said.
