Southland Roundup : Wilson Leads Azusa Pacific to Victory

Quarterback Fitz Wilson rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two others as Azusa Pacific rallied for a 34-27 victory over Redlands Saturday at Azusa.

Wilson ran for 139 yards in 16 carries and completed seven of 10 passes for 101 yards for Azusa Pacific (1-2). He scored on runs of 61, 31 and nine yards and completed touchdown passes of four and 11 yards.

Redlands, with 156 yards rushing in the first half, led 21-14 at halftime, but Wilson scored on a 31-yard run and added an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Cougars ahead for good, 27-21.

Azusa Pacific had 421 yards total offense, including 320 rushing. Redlands, paced by Curt Landreth’s 148 yards rushing in 25 carries, finished with 349 yards total offense. Landreth also scored twice for Redlands (1-2).

San Diego 30, Claremont-Mudd 13--Fullback Todd Jackson rushed for 151 yards in 21 carries and scored one touchdown as the Toreros scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Stags at Claremont.

San Diego (3-0) trailed, 13-10, at the end of the third quarter, but Charles Taumopeteau scored from one yard out early in the fourth to put the Toreros ahead, 17-10. Jackson scored on a 63-yard run, and quarterback Brendan Murphy a 26-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring.

Murphy rushed for 90 yards in 11 carries and completed seven of 16 passes for 81 yards. The loss dropped Claremont-Mudd to 0-2.

San Francisco St. 32, UC Santa Barbara 14--Junior quarterback Herman Tatum passed for three touchdowns to lead the Gators at San Francisco.

Tatum, a former standout at Southwest Los Angeles College, completed 25 of 29 passes for 298 yards.

Tatum threw two touchdown passes in the first half to help the Gators (2-1) to a 19-0 halftime lead. Santa Barbara dropped to 1-2.

Angelo St. 45, Cal Poly SLO 20--Mickey Russell passed for three touchdowns to lead the Rams at San Angelo, Tex.

Russell tossed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Steven Lee, and Lee ran three yards for another score as the Rams (4-0) broke the game open in the second quarter. Cal Poly SLO fell to 2-1.

Cal State Northridge 31, Central St. (Okla.) 28--Albert Fann rushed for 137 yard and had four receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Matadors at Northridge.

Occidental 24, Pomona-Pitzer 14--Freshman tailback Gary Little rushed for 139 yards in 23 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Tigers at Pomona.

Humboldt St. 29, Whittier 6--Sophomore Freeman Baysinger returned the second-half kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to lead the Lumberjacks at Acata, Calif.
