A 20-year-old man was critically injured Sunday when he was accidentally shot in the stomach as he and a teen-age friend played with a shotgun, Los Angeles police said.

Jared Kress was shot in the left side of the upper abdomen about 5 p.m. while visiting a home in the 7900 block of Oakdale Avenue in Canoga Park, Sgt. Woody Baca said. Kress and the 18-year-old friend, whom police would not identify, apparently had been playing with the gun when it went off, Baca said.

Kress was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery late Sunday for his gunshot wound, a hospital spokeswoman said.

“So far, it seems accidental,” Baca said of the shooting. However, Baca said there were several people in the house at the time of the incident and that police were continuing their investigation.
