San Diego Sports et Cetera : UC San Diego Shut Out in Soccer by No. 2 UCLA

UC San Diego missed tying UCLA by inches late in the second half of its nonconference men’s soccer match Tuesday at El Camino College.

The Bruins, ranked No. 2 in the country, held on to defeat UCSD, the defending NCAA Division III champions, 1-0, on a goal late in the first half. UCLA (9-0) recorded its seventh consecutive shutout. Bruin goalie Anton Nistl leads the nation in shutouts with eight.

Ray Fernandez scored UCLA’s goal. UCSD (5-2-2) was outshot, 13-3, but one of its attempts rolled wide by inches late in the second half.

FOOTBALL

The San Diego State football game against Utah Saturday will be broadcast by KCBQ (1170 AM) instead of KFMB, which regularly carries the Aztecs. KFMB, which also broadcasts the Padres, will be covering the Padres against the San Francisco Giants. KFMB will broadcast the remaining Aztec football games this season.

Vince Pellerito, a sophomore offensive lineman from West Torrance High School, has quit the San Diego State football team, Coach Al Luginbill said.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Brad Thomas has been named an assistant coach for the University of San Diego’s women’s basketball team.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene defeated The Master’s College, 18-16, 15-2, 15-2, in a nonconference match to win its third consecutive match.

U.S. International led late in two of the three games but lost to UC Irvine, 15-12, 15-13, 15-12, at USIU.
