Newport Beach : Frantic Efforts Fail to Prevent Youth Suicide
A frantic overnight police search for a 16-year-old Newport Beach boy who had threatened suicide ended Wednesday when the young man jumped to his death from the top of the building in which his pediatrician had an office, police said.
The young man, who had been suffering from autism and depression, leaped from the roof of the nine-story building at 1407 Avocado Ave. at about 7:45 a.m., police said.
After the boy told a friend Tuesday evening that he planned to take his own life, police searched three square miles of Newport Beach using helicopters and dogs but were unable to find the boy.
